Cost saving and improving environmental performance through business clusters

REE to help businesses work together partnered by GBN

Release date: 03/02/2010

Resource Efficiency East (REE) is delighted to announce the forthcoming launch of a new project providing free resource efficiency support to businesses in Bedfordshire.

The Business Cluster Project will look at ways to help businesses improve resource efficiency on a collective basis and will focus on key issues such as waste management and sustainable procurement.

The project will be delivered on behalf of REE by Bedfordshire Green Business Network and we are pleased to offer you the opportunity to take part and to support your business to improve your resource efficiency.

Starting in February 2010, we will bring together groups of companies either on industrial estates, or by shared industry sectors to explore what environmental issues they face and to see whether solutions could be found by businesses working together. Larger businesses are welcome to get involved also and will perform an invaluable role by mentoring and sharing best practice with smaller businesses.

So, what’s in it for me?

As an example of how businesses could work together, consider your waste to landfill. Let’s say you have a reasonable amount of plastics – not enough for a separate collection or to buy a baler. Your waste contractor may not be able to recycle these. If you get together with several other businesses nearby generating similar plastics, you may then have enough for it to be of interest to a recycling company – you may even get money back.

The business cluster project will help you to source suppliers and will supply expert help for those who need it to resolve any issues that they have.

Learning from each other and from the best

Sharing best practice will also form part of the project and mentors from larger businesses will be on hand to give the benefit of their experience and expertise. This will be achieved by a series of short meetings, and reciprocal on-site tours and audits to either demonstrate best practice or highlight where improvements can be made.

So, where’s the catch?

This service is free of charge to small to medium sized enterprises in the East of England. All we require from participating businesses is that you provide us with utility bills to show where you’ve made savings, and that you are prepared to give up some time both to attend meetings and to make some changes to your business. Experience shows that substantial cost savings can be made.

We will be holding short monthly meetings on industrial estates throughout Bedfordshire. Any business in Bedfordshire and the Eastern Region can get more information or sign up to become part of the project by contacting Jane Varley or Mark Thomson on 01234 241411 or by emailing info@gbn-bedfordshire.org.uk
