GBN and Bedfordia Bio Energy shared top honours at the Bedfordshire and Luton Business Excellence Awards 2006, as they were named joint winners of the Environmental Business Award.
GBN beat off stiff competition to win the Award, including fellow GBN members Hain Celestial. The Environmental Business Award is awarded to organisations or businesses that have demonstrated a commitment to environmental and social responsibility through increased environmental awareness, sound environmental management, continuous environmental efficiency improvements and community involvement.
It was GBN’s continued dedication to helping local businesses implement environmental management systems, reduce waste, resolve difficulties and achieve savings through resource efficiency of almost £500,000 that impressed the judges. Equally impressive was Bedfordia’s new bio-gas plant, which produces electricity, heat, energy and bio-fertiliser from recycled food chain waste, which gave the judges no option but to split the honours between the two organisations.
These prestigious Awards are run by Premier Newspapers, and sponsored by a variety of organisations, including one of GBN’s funders - Bedfordshire County Council. Over the past few years, GBN member companies have fared well at the Awards, with Briton EMS, Arenson Group, HMM and others winning a raft of prizes. This year, it was GBN’s turn to take home the honours.
